SAPO Trust mission is to be service-driven and to develop a comprehensive range of plant material that can be supplied in a cost effective manner to the different fruit industries of South Africa. The Product Development Department, under the leadership of Burgert W van Dyk, import new fruit varieties from around the world to test and commercialised as part fulfilment of this mission. Services are also available to any foreign or local License Holder, Breeder, Developer or interested party. Although our main focus is on deciduous fruit, we also provide these services for other fruits and flowers.

The following services are available from SAPO Trust Product Development Department:

Importing
SAPO Trust applies for import permits and import varieties from nominated source(s) at clients’ request.

Variety listing and Plant Breeders’ Rights
Application for Plant Breeders' Rights and Variety Listing can be done by SAPO Trust for nominated varieties. Variety listing is compulsory in order for anyone to grow or distribute fruit of a certain variety in South Africa. The process of Plant Breeders’ Rights and Variety Listing takes approximately two years.

Royalties
SAPO could collect and administer royalties on behalf of the owner. Due royalties will be paid over to the Overseas Co-operator/Licensor. Normally SAPO does this function for a percentage share in the royalties. This service also includes the application of Reserve Bank Approval for the paying of such royalties.
